Fall Home Maintenance Checklist for Southern Indiana and Louisville
Updated October 20, 2026
Before colder weather settles in, take a walk around your home. A loose handrail, peeling paint, or an overflowing gutter is easier to address when you have time to plan.
For homeowners in Clarksville, Jeffersonville, New Albany, Sellersburg, and Greater Louisville, this checklist provides a practical place to start.
1. Check gutters and downspouts
Look for leaves, overflowing gutters, loose connections, and downspouts that discharge water beside your foundation.
Watch what happens during the next rain. Does water flow through the downspouts, or spill over the gutter edges? Make a note of trouble spots and arrange safe cleaning or repairs.
If climbing a ladder is difficult or unsafe, get help with the inspection.
2. Look for peeling paint and damaged exterior wood
Check porch columns, window trim, door frames, fascia, and other painted wood surfaces.
Look for peeling paint, open joints, soft spots, or exposed wood. These areas may need repairs and proper surface preparation before repainting.
Exterior painting depends on suitable weather and the paint manufacturer’s application requirements. Getting an estimate early gives you time to discuss what can be completed this season.
3. Check doors, windows, and drafts
Look for damaged weatherstripping, gaps around exterior door frames, and windows that do not close securely.
A door sweep or replacement weatherstripping may help address an obvious draft. Have damaged trim and failed exterior sealant assessed before simply covering them with more caulk.
Keep drainage openings and ventilation clear.
4. Put hoses away and prepare outdoor plumbing
Disconnect, drain, and store garden hoses before freezing weather arrives. Follow the instructions for winterizing your outdoor faucets and irrigation system.
Check for water lines in unheated areas. If you are unsure how to protect them, ask a qualified plumber about the right approach for your home. Read the American Red Cross guidance on preventing frozen pipes.
5. Check steps, porches, and outdoor lighting
Clear leaves and clutter from your regular walking routes. Check for loose handrails, damaged steps, uneven boards, and lights that no longer work.
Pay particular attention to the route between your driveway and front door. Make a repair list now so these items can be addressed before winter weather makes access more difficult.
6. Get ready to use your heating equipment
Follow your heating equipment’s maintenance instructions and arrange professional servicing when needed. Have fireplaces and chimneys inspected and cleaned by a qualified professional.
If you use an electric space heater, keep it at least three feet from items that can burn, plug it directly into a wall outlet, and turn it off before sleeping or leaving it unattended. Never use an oven to heat your home. Read Indiana’s alternative-heating safety guidance.
Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms according to their instructions.
7. Make a short, realistic repair list
Divide your list into three groups:
- Safety concerns: Loose railings, damaged steps, or poor lighting.
- Weather protection: Gutter problems, exposed wood, or damaged weatherstripping.
- Indoor projects: Painting, trim repairs, and other improvements you would like completed during colder months.
For rental properties, a fall walkthrough is also a useful opportunity to document maintenance needs and plan work between tenants.
